Smart Export Guarantee (SEG): Turn Surplus Solar Power into Cash

July 6, 2025by Admin

Why Every UK Solar-Panel Owner Needs the Smart Export Guarantee

If you own solar panels, a battery storage system or any renewable-electricity micro-generator, the Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) could be the quickest way to earn money, slash energy bills and accelerate Net-Zero goals. Introduced in 2020, the SEG lets you sell every surplus kilowatt-hour (kWh) you export to the National Grid—often for up to 15p/kWh. Miss out and you’re literally letting cash—and clean energy—escape for free.

What Is the Smart Export Guarantee?

The Smart Export Guarantee is a government-mandated scheme forcing medium and large UK energy suppliers (those with ≥150,000 customers) to offer an SEG tariff that pays generators for exported renewable electricity. The SEG replaces the closed Feed-in Tariff (FiT) but keeps the same big advantage: money in your pocket every time your panels over-produce.

Key SEG Facts at a Glance

Feature

Ofgem
Eligible tech
Solar PV, wind, hydro, anaerobic digestion, micro-CHP
Certification
MCS-certified installation or Flexi-Orb equivalent
Metering
Smart meter or export meter giving half-hourly readings

Fixed or variable SEG tariff (supplier decides rate)
Current top rate
≈15 p/kWh (check latest Ofgem list)
Dual participation
No FiT + SEG simultaneously

Who Qualifies for a SEG Tariff?

MCS-Certified System

Your installer and hardware must hold Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS) accreditation (or Flexi-Orb equivalent).

Smart Meter

A SMETS2 smart meter capable of half-hourly export readings is mandatory.

Grid Connection (G98/G99)

Your Distribution Network Operator (DNO) must have approved the export connection.

No FiT Export Payments

If you still receive FiT export payments, you can’t double-dip. You may, however, switch from deemed FiT export to actual SEG export if it pays more.

England, Scotland or Wales

SEG currently excludes Northern Ireland.

Not sure if your installer is compliant? See our checklist of MCS-certified solar panel companies.

How to Apply for the Best SEG Tariff

  • MCS certificate
  • Proof of identity & address
  • Smart-meter export MPAN

Use the latest Ofgem SEG supplier list. Focus on:

  • Price per kWh (fixed)

  • Price structure (variable time-of-export)

  • Payment frequency (monthly vs quarterly)

Fill in each supplier’s online SEG form; upload certificates; sign export contract.

Supplier confirms your smart meter is sending half-hourly export data.

Income is credited to your energy account or paid into your bank every month/quarter.

Maximising SEG Income: 7 Pro Tips

  1. Chase the Highest Rate
SEG tariffs change fast. Set calendar reminders to review rates every quarter.
  2. Use Battery Storage Strategically
Charge your battery overnight on cheap off-peak EV tariffs (e.g., 7.5p/kWh) and export at daytime peak SEG rates.
  3. Optimise Panel Orientation
Clean panels annually; trim shading foliage; consider east-west arrays for longer generation hours.
  4. Load-Shift High-Usage Appliances
Run washing machines, dishwashers and EV chargers when solar production is high so that only true surplus is exported.
  5. Monitor with Apps
Pair your inverter app with smart-meter data to track exactly when exports spike.
  6. Add More Renewables
Small wind turbines or additional solar strings can lift your exportable surplus.
  7. Stay MCS-Compliant
Keep paperwork handy; SEG suppliers audit systems periodically.

Already producing more than you use? Boost self-consumption with a solar battery storage system—our step-by-step guide covers sizing, costs and ROI.

How Much Can You Earn? Worked Example

  • System size: 4 kW south-facing solar PV
  • Annual generation: 3,800 kWh
  • Self-consumption: 55% → 2,090 kWh
  • Exported surplus: 1,710 kWh
  • SEG rate: 15 p/kWh

Annual SEG income = 1,710 × £0.15 = £256.50
Plus bill savings (2,090 kWh × 24 p/kWh import price) = £501.60
Total annual benefit: ≈£758. Payback period on a £5,500 install drops to 7.25 years.

SEG, EVs and Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G)

Got an electric vehicle? Soon you’ll be able to export car-battery power back to the grid via V2G chargers and earn the same SEG export price. Early trials show households doubling annual SEG payments by smart-charging overnight and exporting morning peaks.

EV owner? Pair SEG with cheap night-time energy—our EV time-of-use tariff roundup shows the best rates.

Quick Checklist Before You Apply

  • Solar PV / wind / hydro system installed & MCS certificate in hand
  • Smart meter transmitting half-hourly export data
  • Chosen Ofgem-approved SEG supplier & tariff rate verified
  • Bank details ready for export payments
  • Diary reminder every 90 days to compare SEG tariffs again

Frequently Asked Questions (SEO FAQ Schema Ready)

1.Is the Smart Export Guarantee taxable?

SEG income counts as trading income but most households fall under the £1,000 Trading Allowance or £1,000 Property Allowance. Check with HMRC.

1.Can I keep my current electricity supplier?

Yes. Your SEG supplier does not need to be your import supplier.

1.What happens on cloudy days?

You only get paid for actual exported kWh, but you still benefit from lower imports.

1.Do I need planning permission for solar panels?

Most domestic rooftop solar is Permitted Development; exceptions include listed buildings and conservation areas.
